General Accountability and Purpose

The Sr. Manager, Lending - Commercial is responsible for the management and growth of the Commercial Lending portfolio, and is expected to take on a share of the leadership of the Credit Union; its financial strength, viability and responsiveness to member needs. This is a full time role.

Responsibilities

Under general direction of the General Manager (GM), this position is responsible for the following key areas, and any other duties as may be assigned:

Commercial Lending & Credit Risk Management

The Sr Manager, Lending - Commercial will act as chief relationship manager on all business accounts and manage all existing credits pursuant to lending authority delegated by the GM under the Investment and Lending Policy:   

· Facilitating borrower applications, adjudications, and recommendations to the GM, Credit Committee, and Board as appropriate;

· Coordinating communications related to applications, including valuations, second opinions, reference checking, etc; 

· Completing all transactions, registering security, and executing all related documentation;

· Monitoring accounts and providing credit activity and portfolio reports to the Credit Committee and Board.

· Supervise collection of all commercial loans and LOCs.

· Recommending changes to the Investment and Lending Policy as needed.

· Providing support, training and advice to the Credit Committee and Board as needed.

· Supervise the optimal use of the banking system, implementation of IFRS9 standards, and regulatory reporting.  

Strategic Risk Management

Ensure the Credit Union has a proactive approach to support social enterprises, co-ops, and non-profits, consistent with the credit Union's strategic plan:

· Submitting to the Board for consideration and approval: business objectives; business strategy; as a component of the annual business plan and budget;

· Establish targets for financial performance in conjunction with the Board of Directors;

· Implementing approved business strategy and business plans;

· Implementing effective enterprise risk management plans; including elements of the Credit Union's AML risk control regime, and cyber security program.

Operations Management

The Sr. Manager, Lending – Commercial will also be expected to provide support functions to the General Manager based on their unique capacities and skills. The following represent the primary items for further consideration:

A. Human Resources

· Provide leadership and training as appropriate to maintain a work environment that promotes positive morale and performance;

· Collaboratively, develop and maintain effective Human Resource programs to support the strategic goals of the credit union (including recruiting, performance management, training, employee relations, compensation and administration);

· Plan for the development of personnel resources, coach and develop staff; maintain succession plan and programs which will encourage successful future management of the credit union.

B. Member Service, Marketing and Communications

· Collaboratively, ensure the credit union provides a level and variety of service consistent with members’ needs and profitability objectives while maintaining the unique culture of the credit union;

· Communicate with members and resolve outstanding issues through appropriate communication vehicles. Supervise the credit union’s website, online presence and member newsletter. 

· Maintain a positive and credible presence and profile for the credit union within the community.

C. Governance

· Establish an effective working relationship with the General Manager and Board of Directors and provide support and consultative advice regarding all aspects of lending;

· When requested, support the General Manager in organizing meetings, proposing agendas and providing timely reporting, coordinating and facilitating the Board’s planning sessions;

· Assist Board in meeting their corporate governance requirements.

D. External, Regulatory and Partner Relations

· As directed, represent the credit union in its relationships with members, suppliers, peers, strategic alliances, regulatory authorities, and community groups.

Qualifications

1. Education:  Post secondary education in a related discipline.  Banking or Credit Union training strongly preferred in management, financial and risk management, and lending. Accounting designation strongly preferred.

2. Experience:  5 years financial industry experience in progressively senior management positions, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

3. Job Competencies Profile:

· Comprehensive knowledge of financial management, analysis and control

· Hands-on working knowledge of commercial lending – preference will be given for experience in lending to co-ops. 

· Ability to develop strategies, analyze implications and risks, identify solutions and implement recommendations

· Working knowledge and the ability to oversee all aspects of commercial and personal lending

· Good understanding of board governance, reporting and ability to build and maintain an effective working relationship with the board

· Solid communication and interpersonal skills including proven negotiation and team building skills

· Strong computer skills including office applications, banking and product applications. Able to recognize and guide effective technology issue resolution.

· Advanced business planning skills including the ability to actively contribute to development of budgets, business plans, long term and strategic plans

· Ability to analyze and evaluate complex information from a number of sources and find solutions to complex problems

· Solid decision making skills – ability to make sound and timely decisions including situations when data is limited or solutions produce unpleasant consequences
