The Opportunity – Chief Executive Officer

Located in the stunning Bow Valley Corridor, the Bow Valley Credit Union offers a unique opportunity for their Chief Executive Officer to lead a successful and highly regarded Credit Union and to enjoy a unique lifestyle in one of the most beautiful areas of Canada. Led by a dedicated Board of Directors, supported by a loyal membership base, and staffed with a highly motivated and committed team, the Bow Valley Credit Union is poised for growth and expansion throughout all the communities it serves.

The Chief Executive Officer will report directly to the Board of Directors and is responsible for the overall operation and administration of the Credit Union. The CEO will provide leadership and direction in all aspects of the Credit Union and will ensure compliance with sound business practices, legislation, and regulations.

Major purpose of the Position

The Chief Executive Officer will be a seasoned professional with a deep understanding of Member Service and the value of interpersonal relationships. The CEO will carry out the implementation and execution of the Corporate Strategic Plan as created with the Board of Directors, and ensure that the Vision, Statement of Purpose, and Value, are achieved. Bow Valley Credit Union is committed to remaining independent and is embarking on a growth strategy to ensure that. Working with the Executive Team and indeed all staff, the CEO will serve as an example of and ensure that the workplace environment encourages pride, teamwork, self-development, and mutual respect.

Key Accountabilities

  • Ensure that the financial products and other services offered meet and satisfy the needs of the membership.
  • Provide the Board of Directors with information to assist in decision making.
  • Facilitate and participate in all aspects of the Strategic Planning process.
  • Manage the BVCU employee team to ensure an effective and efficient staff complement is achieved, and that training and career development are provided as required.
  • Ensure that BVCU is seen as a sound and responsive community financial institution.
  • Responsible for the overall financial performance.
  • Manage the overall Credit and Deposit gathering functions to achieve Corporate goals.
  • Ensure that Corporate Plans are developed and implemented into actions.
  • Ensure effective relationships are developed and maintained with all members of the Cooperative system.
  • Ensure ongoing compliance with the Credit Union Act, Credit Union Regulations, By-Laws, and other laws, rules, and regulations governing Credit Unions.
  • Prepare and facilitate Board Meetings on a monthly basis and additionally as required.
  • Maintain an active presence in all communities served as well as within the Credit Union System.
  • Coach, mentor, and advise team members to provide motivation, understanding, and support of BVCU’s goals and objectives.

Education and Experience

  • An undergraduate degree in Commerce, Business, or a related business discipline, or a combination of experience and significant ongoing personal development.
  • Post graduate education and training would be a definite asset.
  • An expectation of ten years’ experience in a senior leadership role within a mid-sized Credit Union or other financial institution.
  • Familiarity with the culture and purpose of the Credit Union System and the value placed on our members and serving their needs.
  • Hands on experience and understanding of the Credit and Deposit functions.
  • A solid knowledge of financial management, business operations, and accounting.
  • Highly developed skills in strategic thinking and strategic planning.
  • Direct experience having significant interaction with internal and external business partners and providers.

  • Senior level interpersonal skills including the ability to relate and communicate to all levels of the organization, the Credit Union System, the Members, and the local communities.
  • Strong overall leadership skills combined with the ability to effectively coach and mentor others.
  • Highly developed problem-solving skills and analytical abilities.
